With your dog in the down position, you can move on to the roll over exercise.
Because exposing his tummy makes him feel vulnerable (to potential attackers), your dog will lie on his side or back only if he feels safe.
Teaching The Roll Over
1. Show your dog a treat
2. Move the treat closer to his nose, then move it slowly around towards his shoulder, over the back of his neck and then down.
3. The dog’s head will follow your hand until he has to lie flat on his side to keep the treat in sight.
4. At this point say ‘roll over’, and give your dog the treat and stroke his tummy. Practice until he learns that ‘roll over’ is a rewarding command to follow.
